Barren Island, located in the Andaman Sea, is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. Situated approximately 135 kilometers northeast of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India, this volcanic island is part of the chain of Andaman Islands. The volcano on Barren Island is classified as a stratovolcano and has been intermittently active in recent decades, with eruptions recorded as early as the late 18th century. The last significant eruption occurred in 2017, emitting ash clouds and lava flows.
